This fall marks a season of transition for our church family. After years of faithful service as an elder and worship leader at Faith Bible Fellowship Church of York, Alex Kocman will be concluding his ministry with us later this year as he and his family step into pastoral ministry in a fuller capacity with Citylight Dover, a church plant in Dover, Pennsylvania. We are deeply grateful for the Kocmans' service to our congregation, and we rejoice in the Lord's call on their lives even as we entrust this next season to Him. As part of this transition, the Elder Board is now accepting applications for a part-time Music Ministry Director; the full job description is below.

Music Ministry Director

Reports to: Elder Board of Faith Bible Fellowship Church of York
Status: Part-Time (approximately 5 hours per week)
Compensation: $5,500 annually

Position Summary

Faith Bible Fellowship Church of York is seeking a part-time Music Ministry Director to oversee and lead the musical aspects of our corporate worship.

Faith Bible Fellowship Church exists to joyfully build Christ's kingdom, household by household, in York and beyond through biblical worship, rich fellowship, and bold witness. In keeping with that mission, the purpose of our music ministry is to glorify God by leading the congregation in biblical, Christ-centered worship and encouraging the saints through the singing of psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs (Ephesians 5:18–20; Colossians 3:16–17).

The Music Ministry Director will serve under the oversight of the Elder Board and work closely with the pastors, elders, and the worship team to cultivate congregational singing that is biblically faithful, theologically rich, musically excellent, and focused upon the glory of God.

Character and Church Commitment

The Music Ministry Director should:

  • Demonstrate a growing and evident relationship with Jesus Christ through godly character, personal holiness, and faithful Christian living.
  • Be in agreement with the Articles of Faith of the Bible Fellowship Church and supportive of the doctrine, mission, and ministry philosophy of Faith BFC York.
  • Be a member of Faith Bible Fellowship Church of York or be willing to become a member upon accepting the position.
  • Demonstrate a humble, servant-hearted approach to ministry and a willingness to serve under the leadership and oversight of the Elder Board.
  • Work well with pastors, elders, musicians, vocalists, and other volunteers.
  • Be dependable, organized, teachable, and able to take initiative in fulfilling ministry responsibilities.
  • Understand music ministry primarily as a means of serving and strengthening the congregation rather than as a platform for performance.

Qualifications

The preferred candidate will:

  • Have previous experience serving in church music or worship ministry.
  • Possess sufficient musical training and experience to effectively lead congregational singing.
  • Be proficient in piano and/or guitar and capable of leading vocally while accompanying congregational singing.
  • Possess a working knowledge of music and music theory and be comfortable working with the variety of hymns and contemporary songs used at Faith BFC.
  • Be able to assess the musical abilities of volunteers and help place and develop musicians according to their gifts, abilities, and level of commitment.
  • Possess sufficient familiarity with sound and audio equipment to communicate and coordinate effectively with the church's audio/video volunteers.
  • Demonstrate biblical and theological discernment in evaluating songs for use in corporate worship.

Formal musical training is beneficial but not required. Faithfulness to Scripture, Christian character, musical competence, and the ability to lead the congregation well are of greater importance.

Primary Responsibilities

The Music Ministry Director will:

  • Oversee and coordinate the musical aspects of Faith BFC's regular corporate worship services.
  • Work under the direction of the Elder Board in planning music for Sunday worship.
  • Select songs that are biblically faithful, theologically sound, congregationally singable, and appropriate for the worship of the church.
  • Seek to maintain a healthy balance of historic hymns and biblically faithful contemporary songs.
  • Coordinate musicians and vocalists for weekly worship services.
  • Lead regular rehearsals with scheduled musicians and vocalists in preparation for Sunday worship.
  • Prepare and communicate the weekly song selections and necessary musical information in a timely manner.
  • Lead the congregation in singing during corporate worship services.
  • Coordinate with the pastors and others responsible for preparing the order of worship so that the music serves the overall direction and emphasis of the service.
  • Work with the audio/video team as needed to ensure that the musical portions of the service are supported effectively.
  • Identify, encourage, mentor, and develop members of the congregation who demonstrate musical gifts and a desire to serve the church.
  • Help cultivate a worship ministry characterized by humility, preparation, excellence, unity, and joyful service.
  • Attend meetings with the Elder Board or pastoral staff as requested when matters related to the music ministry are being discussed.

Ministry Philosophy

At Faith BFC, we believe the gathered church is the primary participant in congregational worship. Therefore, the goal of the music ministry is not to entertain an audience or showcase musicians, but to serve and support the congregation as God's people sing His truth together.

Accordingly, musical selections and arrangements should encourage robust congregational participation, clearly communicate biblical truth, exalt Jesus Christ, and direct attention toward God rather than toward those leading from the platform.

The Music Ministry Director should seek to carry out this ministry with the conviction that:
